How can I apply for Social Security Disability Insurance?

On Behalf of | Oct 20, 2025 | Social Security Disability |

If you are trying to apply for a disability benefit and have a work history that is covered by social security, pursuing a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application may be a good place to start. Here are two things you should know about this federal program:

What is SSDI and do I qualify?

SSDI provides monthly disability payments to people who are unable to work for at least a year due to a disability or terminal illness. To be eligible for the program, your medical condition must meet social security’s strict medical criteria for disability. Additionally, you need to earn a certain amount of “work credits” or tax contribution from your work history.

For the year 2025, the program administration’s substantial gainful activity (SGA) earning limits are at $1,620 per month (non-blind people) and $2,700 per month (statutorily blind people). This means that if you are earning more than the monthly SGA limit, you will not be eligible for SSDI.

How long is the application process?

Although each application is unique, the average processing period may take anywhere between three to six months. You can send your application in person, over the phone or via their website as soon as you develop your disability.

If you receive a denial letter on your first try, do not feel discouraged. Since most applicants deal with the same dilemma, there are plenty of available resources online that you can utilize to help strengthen your medical evidence. This step is crucial when you file your SSDI appeal.

There is strength in community

If at any point in your SSDI application, you feel overwhelmed or beaten, take a deep pause and seek help from your community. Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Your family, friends and disability advocates can all become the support system you need in this challenging course of your life.
