On Behalf of | Oct 22, 2024 | Social Security Disability |

Fibromyalgia is relatively common, with around 5% of the population reported as suffering from it. Nonetheless, the condition is not very well understood and it is difficult to diagnose.

What are some of the more common symptoms of fibromyalgia and can you claim Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) if you have been diagnosed?

Symptoms of fibromyalgia

The symptoms of fibromyalgia can vary from person to person, but they generally involve pain across different areas of the body. Here are some of the most common symptoms seen among sufferers:

  • A dull and burning ache: The pain associated with fibromyalgia is often described as a dull and burning ache. This can involve the limbs, head, chest, abdomen, lower back and other areas of the body
  • Difficulty focussing: Fibromyalgia is commonly associated with cognitive difficulties such as struggling to concentrate. This is often referred to as “fibro fog”
  • Sleeping issues: Sufferers of fibromyalgia may also struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Headaches, bowel problems and dizziness are also common in cases of fibromyalgia.

Is fibromyalgia disabling?

The short answer to this question is yes. However, it also depends on the severity of symptoms. The Social Security Administration does consider fibromyalgia a disability, but only in severe cases. To improve your chances of receiving benefits, you will need compelling medical evidence that shows you have suffered from severe symptoms for an extended period.

Claims for SSDI can be complex and tricky to navigate on your own. It is far better to seek legal guidance so that you are armed with all of the relevant information.
