What Happens in a Federal Court Disability Appeal?

In a federal appeal, there are three possible outcomes. The judge can award benefits. Your case could be sent back down to the Appeals Council or the ALJ level of the appeals process for a rehearing. Or, your claim could be denied yet again. If you do get denied by a district court judge, you could, in theory, take your case all the way to the Supreme Court. That said, if you lose in district court it is probably better to start all over with a new application.
